William James Hughes

March 29, 1943 — August 23, 2025

New Port Richey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William James Hughes, 82, of New Port Richey, Florida on August 23, 2025. Bill was born on March 29, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents Charles and Mary Hughes. There he grew up with his four siblings (Joseph, Charles, Mary, and Loretta) and graduated from Roman Catholic High School in 1961. Bill then dutifully served as a Philadelphia Police Officer for 25 years; he also served two honorable years in the Army at Fort Devens in Massachusetts from 1965-1967. Upon his retirement from the police force in 1988, Bill and his family moved to warm and sunny Florida. There, he worked as a courier for the St. Petersburg Times newspaper for fifteen years.

Bill was known for his sharp wit and bright smile. He enjoyed going to Starbucks for his daily iced coffee and never turned down an invitation for a cold beer. He loved all animals, and they loved him right back. He enjoyed traveling and people-watching in new places. He rooted for the Flyers and the Phillies, and even got to be on the field when the Phillies won the 1980 World Series.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis K. Hughes; they were married on June 29, 1968 and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Bill is also survived by his three children, Christopher Hughes (wife Jennifer), Sherri Kolkowski (late husband Brian), and Dee Hinote (husband Jeremy). ‘Grampy’ enjoyed the presence of his five grandchildren: Erin, Kelly, Olivia, Sophie, and Ben, and was a loving ‘Uncle Bill’ to his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Joseph, Charles, and Mary. He is survived by his sister Loretta.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Bill will be missed immensely by all who have known and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Gulfside Hospice.
