After High School in Kingston, Massachusetts, Dick was off to join the Navy in 1952. During his Navy career he advanced to the highest enlisted rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard many ships including the USS Healy, USS South Carolina, and USS Farragut. He was chosen to lead new recruits joining the Navy as a Recruit Company Commander. He was dispatched as a Navy liaison to Saudi Arabia and stationed there to assist with training their military personnel. He loved his career in the Navy and finally retired after 34 years of honorable service.

In 1960 Dick married his first love, Elizabeth “Betty.” They had 2 children Donna and Rich Jr. They spent many years in Virginia Beach until he retired in 1989. In 1992 they all moved to Florida and lived happily together until Betty passed away in November of 2003 after 43 years of marriage together. Dick belonged to Hudson First Methodist Church where he met his 2nd love, Dawn Moneypenny whose husband had also passed away in August of 2003. Dick and Dawn married in Feb 2005 by Rev. Richard Schmitt and have been married 18 years. Being empty nesters as Dawn's boys Scott, Mark and Don were all married and starting families, Dick and Dawn had fun life together. You can’t get a sailor off the water; there were so many cruises. They motor homed with a fun group from church that found any reason to party. Dick loved his church and had many roles. He helped set up the nativity scene for 5-6 yrs, worked Tuesdays at the food pantry for 4 yrs, served 3 terms on Trustees, worked for 2 years on Tuesdays doing extra jobs like replacing lightbulbs in the sanctuary. Dick & Jim Turner replaced vinyl siding on high peak of Howard Hill. He would wear his dress Navy Uniform for Military service. Dick's family grew and he loved all his blended grandchildren. The Moneypenny side has all the girls: Shelby, Madison, Kaylen and Lexie. On the Cushing side we have: Brooke, Daniel, Noah, Brig & Bryce. Then there’s one Great Granddaughter, Madelyn. We also have one awesome son-in-law Tom, and 2 keeper daughter-in-laws, Marcie and Tatyana.
